Results of the 2nd Annual Francis Nunes Memorial
2009-09-27

The results are in and Captain Sean MacMillan and his crew on the boat Les Go wiped the slate this year with his total catch of 174.5 lbs. To check out all the results click here.

As the curtains came down on the tournament, the second held at Nelson's Dockyard in 2009, the event was hailed as an unmitigating success by all involved, from the fishermen, to the sponsors, the organisers and especially the spectators. Most of the boats had set off from Nelson's Dockyard by 6.00 am, with bacon and egg rolls, coffees, and big smiles.

The crowd started arriving and the car park was full by 3.00 pm, with the grills and $5 bar well under way serving excellent food and cold drinks to those attending. From 3.00 pm - 4.30 pm the weigh in took place, with the outstanding success from Les Go who won champion boats overall and for boats 25 feet and under. There were also excellent results from Joel Patterson on John Fuller's Blue Rapid, who won largest Wahoo - weighing in at 62 lbs, and overall largest fish by a male. Largest kingfish was caught by Nicolas Hart on Overdraft, captained by laid back Frankie Hart, and the women came through well for largest tuna won by Amanda Gobinet on Scallywag. Best female, catching a 33lb wahoo, was Rhea Piggott on Vitamin B, and best youth was fourteen year old Donovan Simon catching a 41.75 lb wahoo on Eli Fuller's sloop, Ocean Nomad.

With the focus of this event being a fun family day, a youngest angler prize was introduced last year to encourage children to become interested in fishing. This year it was won by 4 year old Omar Shoul on Team Yamaha, captained by Robert Shoul.

With three boats sailing in from Guadeloupe and St. Barts and two crews flying in from the UK the registered boats were four more than last year, with a final total of 30.

The  event organisers want to thank their sponsors for their support and confidence in the event, as without them it would not be possible - Digicel, Harney Motors, C.O. Williams Construction, Carib Beer, Baileys, Smirnoff and Johnnie Walker (all distributed by A.S. Bryden & Sons (Antigua) Ltd.), United Insurance (distributed by Anjo Insurance), Cavalier Rum and Oasis Water (Distributed by Premier Beverages) and Yamaha and Outdoor World. Media sponsors also get major thanks for promoting and covering the event - the Observer Media Group, Hi-Octane Creative & the Moment is Captured Photography, and Antiguanice.com.

More on photogaphic coverage will come over the coming days, with Robby Breedner on the ground and Antiguanice.com and Kevin Johnson from C.O. Williams in the air, rest assured we covered it all this year. Here is a little taster............
